'WHITE LAMENT'
In 2003 we were commissioned by the Scottish Executive to produce ‘White Lament’ the performance production for National Holocaust Memorial Day, Scotland in January 2004. We worked with a young cast from East Renfrewshire to create the show in workshop, ultimately written by Tim and directed by Katherine. The performance was very successfully shown to an audience of MSP’s, politicians, business and community leaders from all over Scotland. The piece was created during workshops over several months with young people from schools in East Renfrewshire. Our brief was to explore art from the Holocaust. We have worked with visual art, music, poetry and prose. The featured art is from artists banned by the Nazis, was made in reaction or as commentary to the Holocaust or by the those persecuted as comfort or documentation. The performance will feature the work of Marc Chagall, the music of Felix Mendelsohn and Gustav Mahler, poetry from children captive in the Terezin Concentration Camp in 1942-4 and the diaries of Anne Frank and Julius Feldman. We chose to use the story of the White Rose Society as a binding narrative for the piece. The White Rose were a group of young Germans who organised resistance to the Nazis during WWII. They printed and distributed leaflets with calls for the end of the persecution of the Jews and the overthrow of the Nazis. They ultimately paid for their commitment with their lifes and were executed in 1942.The White Rose were also art lovers. They were all musicians and regular attenders of galleries and museums. Their writing was influenced by great literature and poetry.'White Lament'
